Other options for attic insulation include cellulose, spray foam and rigid foam. Cellulose is made of recycled paper and has an R-value of 3.2 to 3.7 per inch, but it can be flammable and requires a fire-rated covering around recessed lighting or heating units to prevent fire hazards. Rigid foam is made of polystyrene, polyisocyanurate or other materials and comes in panels that are cut to fit. It has a high R-value per inch and resists moisture absorption to minimize the risk of mold growth.
