The instrument is exchange-traded, its worst case is known before you buy it, and the British retail market for it is close to non-existent. The explanation says more about broker revenue than about the product.
How small is the UK retail options market?
ICE Futures Europe reports around 30,451 FTSE 100 option contracts traded daily. That is a functioning institutional market and a vanishingly small retail one. Compare it with the CFD and spread betting world, where roughly 167,000 active UK retail leverage traders were counted in May 2025, and the imbalance is obvious.
In the United States the picture is reversed: retail options trading is enormous, mainstream and heavily marketed. The instrument is the same. The difference is infrastructure, tax treatment and what the domestic industry finds profitable to sell.
Can those two markets even be compared?
Not cleanly, and the paragraphs above should be read with that in mind. A daily contract count from an exchange and a survey estimate of how many people hold leveraged positions are not the same kind of measurement, and putting them in the same sentence implies a precision neither supports. The gap between the two markets is real and large. The ratio is not a number anybody should quote.
What do options offer that a CFD does not?
Defined risk on the buying side, which is the big one. Buy a call or a put and the absolute worst case is the premium you paid. It cannot go further. There is no margin call, no close-out at 50% of margin, no overnight financing accruing against you, and no possibility of the position running away overnight beyond what you committed.
Set that against a leveraged CFD, where the loss is open-ended until a stop or a close-out intervenes, and where financing accrues nightly on the full notional. The comparison the evidence supports is narrow and worth stating exactly: buying an option has a maximum loss fixed in advance at the premium, and a leveraged CFD has no maximum until a stop or the close-out rule imposes one. That is not the same as saying options are safe. The defined maximum loss is 100% of the premium, reaching it is entirely routine, and an instrument that reliably takes everything you put into it is a poor candidate for the word safer.

Buying options only. Selling, or writing, options carries open-ended risk and is a very different proposition that this comparison does not cover.
Three things keep the market this small
None of them is that options are unsuitable. First, availability. The number of UK-facing platforms offering proper retail options access, with sensible contract sizes and a usable chain, is small. Many well-known UK trading apps do not offer them at all.
Second, tax. Spread betting sits outside capital gains tax entirely for retail clients, and options do not. Given a choice between a tax-free wrapper and a taxable one, a lot of British traders take the wrapper without examining the instrument underneath it.
Third, commercial incentive: options generate less recurring revenue for a broker than a financed leveraged position does, and the industry markets what pays.
Is the complexity objection fair?
Partly. Options genuinely are harder. Price depends on direction, on how far the move goes, on how long it takes, and on what happens to implied volatility along the way. A beginner can be right about the direction and still lose, which does not happen in the same way with a simple long position. That is a real barrier and it should not be talked down.
But the complexity objection is often deployed selectively. Leveraged CFDs at 30:1 with overnight financing and a close-out rule are not a simple instrument either, and when The Investors Centre read the April 2026 risk disclosures of 14 FCA-authorised UK CFD brokers it put the mean loss rate at 69.9%. Nobody puts a sophistication warning in front of that. Those warnings tend to appear before the products that pay the industry least, which is a pattern worth noticing whenever you meet one.
What does time decay actually do to you?
It erodes the premium every day the underlying fails to move enough, and the erosion accelerates as expiry approaches. This is the mechanism that punishes the classic beginner trade, which is buying a cheap short-dated option on a strong hunch. The hunch can be correct and the option can still expire worthless because the move arrived a week late. The practical consequence is that buying more time costs more premium, and buying less time is cheap for a reason. Anyone whose first options trade is the cheapest contract on the board is buying the one with the least chance of working, which they will discover about four days later.
What should you check on a platform before trading options?
Contract sizes, because a standard contract may represent far more exposure than you intend. Commission per contract and any exercise or assignment fee, which are separate charges people forget. Whether the chain shows implied volatility and the greeks, because trading without them is guessing. And what happens automatically at expiry if you do nothing, which varies and occasionally surprises people expensively.
Those are all things a fee schedule half-answers, and all of them change without announcement, so whatever you read about which UK platform offers what is worth confirming on the platform itself before you act on it.
